The Timken’s ARTS4Schools program serves K through 12 classrooms across San Diego, with a special focus on Title 1 schools in predominantly low income neighborhoods. Through a variety of free arts initiatives, the program aims to enhance students’ visual literacy, creativity, and critical thinking skills.

ARTS4Schools includes interactive docent-led Museum tours, in school art making classes led by Timken teaching artists, professional development opportunities for educators, and a collection of teaching resources that encourage in depth exploration of artworks, artists, and artistic techniques.

To ensure equitable access, Timken provides free transportation for qualifying Title 1 classrooms to participate in onsite Museum experiences.

ARTS4Schools is offered in collaboration with the San Diego Unified School District, including its Visual and Performing Arts Department, and the San Diego County Office of Education. The initiative is generously supported by Patrons of the Prado.

Designed for adults who may not be able to visit the Timken in person, ARTSReach offers presentations highlighting the museum’s collection and special exhibitions, both virtually and in community venues. This program is offered in partnership with Waterford Terrace Retirement Community, Vi at La Jolla Village, Westmont of La Mesa, and Casa de Mañana, reflecting the Museum's ongoing commitment to supporting the local community.

Creative Choices is a free outreach program, offered in partnership with the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility, that serves youth incarcerated in juvenile hall. Through weekly art classes, museum visits, and opportunities to exhibit their artwork, the program fosters meaningful creative engagement, encouraging self-expression, personal growth, and connection to the broader community. Each year, approximately 1,000 students participate, making a positive impact during a critical time in their development.

Creative Engagement is a free, comprehensive art program that supports veterans recovering from physical or mental injuries at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Led by a Timken teaching artist, participants engage in weekly 90-minute art classes, enjoy monthly gallery tours, and have opportunities to exhibit their artwork in bi-annual shows. Serving hundreds annually, the program offers a meaningful and therapeutic outlet for creative expression.

Tailored for individuals with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s and their family members or care partners, Memories at the Museum engages participants in thoughtful discussions about artworks to stimulate visual and verbal expression, spark memory, and foster connection. This program is offered in partnership with the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UC San Diego, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Mingei International Museum, and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Outreach Español is designed for and serves K–12 students from Baja California, providing free transportation and Spanish-language gallery tours for Spanish-speaking youth. This program is offered in collaboration with the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura de Tijuana (IMAC), the Instituto de Cultura de Baja California (ICBC), and the Mingei International Museum.
