This program, The Past is Prologue: Our Changing Discourse Observed through Musical Preludes, charts the ways we have framed and reframed discourse across the centuries — illustrated with famous musical preludes spanning from Bach to Auerbach.

These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe, had painted embellishments and often utilized precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600, and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries.

The program offers space to slow down, reflect, and reconnect—with yourself, your students, and the power of art as a meaningful touch tool. Through guided gallery conversations and a lesson plan overview, educators will explore how works of art can open pathways to self-compassion, deepen empathy, and support both personal well-being and classroom connection.

John Singer Sargent was one of the most celebrated American portraitists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, renowned for capturing the elite figures of the Gilded Age. In this docent-led talk, we will examine how Sargent shaped public images of the wealthy and influential through these deliberate choices, and how his portraits reveal broader social values at the turn of the twentieth century. Art in England during the 19th century was characterized by several diverse movements and interests. It witnessed the development of Romanticism, which gave way to Victorian-era social realism. This was during a time when the country underwent powerful industrialization, which revealed social change and a move toward more realism in art. Literary themes also became integrated into the subject of these paintings. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century also looked to literary works along with medieval themes as a basis for their artwork.
